Sailor Moon and the paranormal… those aren’t typically two subjects that you’d put in close proximity with each other, but surprisingly there were some strong influences on the creation of the series and how it developed.
Today, we’ll be taking a look at what sort of influences the paranormal had on Sailor Moon, and why those influences may have slowly died off in favor of traditional fantasy. Let’s take a look!
One of these things is not like the other…
If you’re anything like me – and I’m not really sure if that’d be a good thing or a bad thing – it’s entirely possible that you didn’t even notice that there was a difference in the lines in the collar on each of the Sailor Soldiers’ uniforms. In fact, I didn’t even really notice until multiple years after I first became acquainted with Sailor Moon, and that’s only because someone pointed it out.
Today, we’re going to take a deeper look at one of the smaller details on the uniforms worn by our favorite sailor-suited soldiers of love and justice. I hope you join along!
Seriously, this is how I write the blog
Back by popular demand, here comes another lightning round of Sailor Moon questions that come up often that are either not long enough to warrant a full-blown answer, or I have no clue what the answer is and I’m willing to go on record and embarrass myself. But I desperately try to keep it to more of the former and less of the latter.

You can’t deny the Four Kings are cute
“Is this another topic on the differences between the anime and manga,” I can hear you groaning. But before you give up in search of something else to read, hang in there – how the characters of the Shitennou, the “Four Kings,” differed between the anime and manga, and especially the differences in Zoisite and Kunzite’s relationship, is actually pretty interesting!
Or… at least it is to me. Your results may vary.
But in any case, today I’m going to take a look in how the Four Kings of the Dark Kingdom changed. Wanna come along?

So, it’s the weekend and I’m bored. I usually try to not stray too far off the theme of this blog (i.e., answering one question about the Sailor Moon universe or the creative forces and inspirations behind it), but in the spirit of summer vacation, I figured it would be fun to look through the site logs and see what kind of search engine terms brought some of you here.
And if I can answer some of the questions while we’re at it, all the better!
Not even pretending to study
Say what you will about Usagi’s lack of interest in educational pursuits, but despite her rather… questionable scores in her scholastic pursuits, at the very least we should give credit where credit’s due: she is portrayed in the anime quite often reading comics, magazines, or other materials. All that hard work (?) must be paying off, because her Japanese — as in, language arts,1 or the study of a national native language — scores are her highest.2
In honor of Usagi’s uncharacteristic pursuit of language arts, I’m going to take you on a tour of Usagi’s room, and we’ll look at some of the magazines she seems to enjoy reading as well as their real-life counterparts.

Sailor Jupiter
If I were to describe Makoto to someone who had never heard of Sailor Moon, it would probably be “feminine tomboy.” That’s one of the things that I really liked about her.
While it would have been all too easy to have gone for the easy gag and made Makoto an out-and-out tomboy with a feminine side that she was ashamed to admit, Makoto owned both of the two sides of her personality, being both proud of her strength as well as proud of her delicate touch.
Today, I’ll be taking a look in how Makoto – and, in particular, Sailor Jupiter – differed in the anime and manga. Why don’t you come along?
