[Manga Comparison] Act 3 – Rei (Sailor Mars)

Manga Comparison (Act 1)

Manga Comparison (Act 3)

What is the Manga Comparison Project?

Since its initial release in the February 1992 issue of Nakayoshi, the Sailor Moon manga has gone through four major reprints in Japan – the original Nakayoshi print, the compilation tankobon print (early 90s), the re-mastered ‘shinsoban‘ reprints (early 2000s), and the ‘kanzen‘ (early 2010s). What you may not know, though, is that Ms. Takeuchi has made changes to the art and text with each release.

This project is dedicated to compiling a list of what’s changed with each release to help us better understand how Sailor Moon has evolved over its past 25 years.

While many of these changes are minor, I think they’re worth pointing out since Ms. Takeuchi felt it was worth making these changes. Please note, though, that when a change is made in one version and is retained in the rest, I will only point out the version when the change is made.

Lastly, I’d like to thank my kind Patreon subscribers who help make this, and other side projects, possible. These comparisons go up 1 month early on Patreon, so it you’re interested in being involved, please check it out!

Does Sailor Moon Have a Connection to the Paranormal?

Maybe YOU can help... solve a mystery

Maybe YOU can help… solve a mystery

Sailor Moon and the paranormal… those aren’t typically two subjects that you’d put in close proximity with each other, but surprisingly there were some strong influences on the creation of the series and how it developed.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at what sort of influences the paranormal had on Sailor Moon, and why those influences may have slowly died off in favor of traditional fantasy. Let’s take a look!

Sailor Moon Quiz – Manga Edition

... Earth?

… Earth?

Continuing with my theme of posting lighter, easier, and slightly less in-depth content over the weekend, I decided that it’d be fun to take on a Sailor Moon trivia quiz “cold” – meaning without doing any research whatsoever, and just answering questions to the best of my ability off the top of my head.

It’s very possible – nay, likely – that I’ll make a complete fool of myself. But hey, I’ve never been shy about admitting what I don’t know! Please note that, for the sake of consistency, all questions are limited to the manga. Anime answers don’t count.

For anyone who would like to try to answer these questions for yourself before reading my answers, I’ll provide the list of questions here:

  1. What is the full name of Sailor Moon’s creator?
  2. What are the four who protect Usagi called?
  3. What is the name of the enemy that they were connected to in a previous generation?
  4. What is the purpose of the talismans wielded by the Outer Senshi?
  5. What does Sailor Moon need to transform into her Super form?
  6. What was the title of the precursor series to Sailor Moon?
  7. Name three attacks that only appear in the manga.
  8. What’s Motoki’s girlfriend’s name?
  9. How many volumes were there in the original manga run?
  10. Where did the Queen of the previous generation wind up going?
  11. Who is Helios?
  12. What is the relationship between Death Phantom and Demando and the rest?
  13. What does Ami’s father do?
  14. What does Rei’s father do?
  15. Who defeated Queen Beryl?
  16. How did Makoto’s parents die?
  17. What does the Omega Area ultimately become?
  18. List the order of Sailor Moon’s forms (her names).
  19. Where did the Death Busters come from?
  20. Who was the editor of Sailor Moon?

What Do the Lines on the Sailor Senshi’s Collars Signify?

One of these things is not like the other...

One of these things is not like the other…

If you’re anything like me – and I’m not really sure if that’d be a good thing or a bad thing – it’s entirely possible that you didn’t even notice that there was a difference in the lines in the collar on each of the Sailor Soldiers’ uniforms. In fact, I didn’t even really notice until multiple years after I first became acquainted with Sailor Moon, and that’s only because someone pointed it out.

Today, we’re going to take a deeper look at one of the smaller details on the uniforms worn by our favorite sailor-suited soldiers of love and justice. I hope you join along!

Answering Your Sailor Moon Questions – the Sequel

Seriously, this is how I write the blog

Seriously, this is how I write the blog

Back by popular demand, here comes another lightning round of Sailor Moon questions that come up often that are either not long enough to warrant a full-blown answer, or I have no clue what the answer is and I’m willing to go on record and embarrass myself. But I desperately try to keep it to more of the former and less of the latter.

Of course, if you have any questions you’d like to suggest, please leave it down below in the comments!

What Was the Inspiration Behind Zoisite and Kunzite’s Relationship?

Who could it be?

Who could it be?

Among all of the liberties that the anime took when it came to redefining the characters of Sailor Moon — and there were certainly plenty — the reworking of Zoisite and Kunzite’s relationship is one of the examples that stands out strongly in my mind.

Today, we’re here to talk about the 1978 manga and subsequent 1982 anime that may have served as an inspiration for how Zoisite and Kunzite’s relationship developed into what we saw in the anime.

And if that doesn’t sound interesting, well then, I guess I just don’t even know who my readers are. If you’ve made it this far, then, I hope you join along for the ride!

How Different Were the Four Kings of the Dark Kingdom in the Anime and Manga?

You can't deny the Four Kings are cute

You can’t deny the Four Kings are cute

“Is this another topic on the differences between the anime and manga,” I can hear you groaning. But before you give up in search of something else to read, hang in there – how the characters of the Shitennou, the “Four Kings,” differed between the anime and manga, and especially the differences in Zoisite and Kunzite’s relationship, is actually pretty interesting!

Or… at least it is to me. Your results may vary.

But in any case, today I’m going to take a look in how the Four Kings of the Dark Kingdom changed. Wanna come along?
