Looking back on it now. I can’t help but think that Sailor Moon had some small influence on the show. In particular the primary three characters, in comparison with the first three Senshi.

Shinji/Usagi: Both have a tendency to be whiny crybabies.

Rei A/Ami: Quiet, reserved, short blue hair.

Asuka/Rei H: Hot headed, long hair, association with the colour red, standoffish with the main character.

Granted that may just be grasping at straws. But given that Anno was apparently a big fan of Sailor Moon, it’s probably not too far outside the realms of plausibility.

There is that famous story of him an Ikuhara cosplaying as Venus and Mars.
